Screen Monoprints

with Linda Kristin Blix

Thursday, August 24th, 2006
10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Screen monoprinting is an innovative new printmaking technique. Brilliant fabric dye is painted onto a silk screen in a fluid manner. Once dry, a squeegee is used to pull clear medium over the screen. The colours and unique surface textures are spectacular and cannot be achieved through painting on paper.

The process satisfies both the painter and the printmaker. Previously tight painters are encouraged to loosen up and be more spontaneous. Students previously intimidated by the technical aspect of printmaking find the simplicity in screen monoprinting a delightful surprise, yet the innumerable possibilities are challenging to the seasoned artist.

Printmaking is like opening an unexpected gift. Painting on the fabric of the screen forces the artist to expect the unexpected, to relax around the painting, enjoy the process and be delighted by the finished results that are not revealed until the last moment.

During this two day workshop students will create a relief print using the easy to carve material "Softolium". Screen monoprints will be influenced by the relief print, and by layering of the two techniques - one extremely fluid, the other graphic and linear - beautiful and unique prints are created.

Day 1:
A.M.
Students will be introduced to the history and techniques of traditional screen printing and screen monoprinting. Examples of screen monoprints will be shown and demonstrated. Students will use fabric dyes to paint onto a screen. Once the painting is dry, they will be instructed as to the set up of a screen printing station and how to proceed with the printing of the monoprint.
P.M.
Students will be introduced to relief printing and asked to design an image that they wish to create through this process. Directions on transferring their drawing onto the Softolium and how to proceed with carving the plate will follow. The remaining time will be spent carving the plate.

Day 2:
Students will be instructed as to how to print their relief print using lino ink, brayers and hand rubbing to print. (This soft material is not suited to using a press and this makes the process do-able following the class.) Once the relief print is created, it will be placed under the screen and used as a guide for painting the monoprint. When the monoprint is dry, the screen monoprint will be printed directly on top of the relief print, creating a layering of the two techniques.
