Basket Weaving

with Leslie Songer Terry

Friday, July 13
Muskoka Lakes Museum
For more information see email
Cost: $65

The Project:

Pouches with Pizazzz!

Make a basket that suits your creativity.  We are going to learn to make a twined pouch that you can finish off however you want.  Either make a very personal wall basket to hold whatever with some embellishments that you have brought to make it truly your own.  Things like pinecones, small shells, feathers, beads etc.  As long as it has a hole in it, you can use it.  I will bring a few things as well to help add to your stash (don't rely on my contributions, make it your own).  Or you can make a berry picking basket, just in time for blueberries.  I will provide a strap so that you can wear it around your neck to keep your hands free for picking those yummy berries.

 LENGTH OF WORKSHOP: 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

MATERIALS FEE:  $15.00 per student

REQUIREMENT FOR STUDENTS: (please insure bring the following, if you do not have any of the items, don’t go out and buy, we can share).

Bucket, pan or vessel for holding water
Scissors or shears suitable for cutting reed, not good sewing shears

Clip style clothes pegs
Awl, ice pick or small knitting needle

Rustic Woodcraft Workshop at Muskoka Place Gallery

Muskoka Place Gallery in Port Carling, Ontario is sponsoring a new rustic woodcraft workshop by Dean Spence of Kapristo Mountain Woodcraft.

Jump into summer with a unique opportunity on Tuesday, July 24, when Spence teaches a brand new workshop called Creating Birch Bark Picture Frames , where participants learn the basic techniques required to work with birch bark and twig to ornament rustic woodcraft.

In this half day workshop students will ornament and complete an 8” X 10” picture frame with materials supplied by Kapristo Mountain Woodcraft. You’ll work with birch bark, pine cones, acorns, twigs and other natural materials, learning how to prepare, attach, and finish them. The same techniques can be applied to the ornamentation of rustic furniture. At the end of the workshop, students will have an ornamented frame ready to be oiled and to have a piece of glass inserted.

The workshop fee of $90.00 covers all costs including materials. A maximum of ten students per class provides group instruction with individualized attention. For those who like to get hands-on with their projects, this workshop is a real bargain.

Dean Spence is a respected rustic furniture builder based in Golden, BC. Originally from Ontario, Dean and his wife Cathie will relocate their home and business to rural Ontario in 2008. In the meantime, they spend summers here marketing their work through workshops and public sales. The couple completed their annual spring workshop tour in BC and Alberta; now they bring their workshops east to Ontario for the summer.

Call 705.765.1048 to register for the workshops. More detailed information about the workshops is available at www.kmw.ca.

Creating Birch Bark Picture Frames

Tool List

Hammer and Nail Punch

Hammer should be a medium weight hammer. Students will be driving 1” to 2” finishing nails. A tack hammer is too small; neither do you want a huge framing hammer. Medium nail punch.

Clippers

One pair of pruning clippers.

Tape Measure or ruler

Razor knife

Heavy-duty, metal-bodied knife with a new blade. A drywall knife is perfect. No plastic handles please.

Drill, bits, extension chord

You will need a lightweight, variable speed reversible drill with 3/8" chuck capacity. Students will be drilling with one hand so they need to be comfortable with the weight of the drill. Battery drills are fine if they have at least 9 volt capacity with extra battery and a charger in good condition. I will rent each of my three drills on a first come basis for a $10.00 charge. Please arrange for this ahead of time! Drilling bits: bring two @ 5/64", one @ 3/32". If you use an electric drill, bring an extension cord at least six meters (15 feet) long.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about the Tool List or any other aspect of the workshop. E: info@kmw.ca P: 250.344.6734.

What to expect:

In this half day workshop, you’ll learn the basic techniques required to work with birch bark and twig to ornament rustic woodcraft. Each student will decorate and take home an 8” X 10” frame to be used as a picture frame or mirror.

The workshop begins with a short introductory talk about my experience with rustic woodcraft. We will discuss safety and proper use of tools, the collection of raw materials, the use of simple techniques to make the process manageable, and how to finish the frame.

You will ornament and complete an 8” X 10” picture frame with materials supplied by Kapristo Mountain Woodcraft. We’ll work with birch bark, pine cones, acorns, twigs and other natural materials, learning how to prepare, attach, and finish them. The same techniques can be applied to the ornamentation of rustic furniture. At the end of the workshop, you will have an ornamented frame ready to be oiled and to have a piece of glass inserted. Reflective glass fits into the frame to create an ornamented rustic mirror, or clear glass creates an ornamented picture frame ready to receive a photo, print or painting.

Workshop Guide: J.P. Frost
Time: 10:00 - 12:30pm
Cost: $35.00
Materials: TBA

A historical/contemporary survey of symbols and their power to transform our lives, this class will travel through time to help us understand the origin of modern symbols and the ways they have been used to terrify, comfort, or inspire courage. Along the way, we will develop a greater appreciation for the deeper symbolic meaning hidden behind symbols of religion, medicine, and politics. Thought will also be given to developing personally meaningful symbols as a result of our exploration.

Jeremy Frost is a graduate student of Philosophy and Religion who has researched myth and ritual in Guinea, West Africa, and Estonia, in the Baltic States. His studies continue as he moves to the Middle East this fall with his partner Angela, where he will continue to explore the symbols, myths, and rituals of religion.
